Life Motto: “Believe in what you pray for.
I do not want to say I did not necessarily believe in my prayer, but I always had self doubts. So, if you really believe in what you pray to God for it will always happen.”

As an adolescence, we usually dream about the direction we would like our life to go within out career path. What was your dream during this time?

  • “I wanted to be a dentist and I do not even know how I came up with that career choice. I just knew that I was going to go to college and either major in biology or some type of science and then go straight to dental school.”

Can you talk to me about specific instances that influenced you to diverge from the route you were on? How did these instances lead to your current situation?

  • “I did what I said I was going to do. I went to Wright State and majored in biology for about 2 years. My first semester I got a 2.5 gpa and you really only need a 2.0 to stay in the science major because it is so hard. When I took on tasks, I realized it was something that was not intriguing and it was not making me happy. I know school is school and I know school does not make you happy. But, I believe you should be intrigued by whatever you are studying. My second year, I was not studying how I should have been and in result I was failing my courses. That same year, I remember my sister and I was sitting in the library. I had just received an F in my biology class and was balling tears and so she said to me ‘ Brittney you need to change your major’ , and I did not want to. I felt at that time if I were to quit, I would be giving up on a dream but in reality it was not really a dream. So, I ended up changing my major to business and from there I ended up changing it to organizational leadership and keeping business as a minor.”

What is your definition of the grey area? Currently, would you say you are in it?

  • “Change is a huge thing I have noticed about the grey area. I feel I experienced a grey area after high school because I did not really want to go to college. I really did not care about it but my family always pushed it. ‘It is what you do after highschool’. I think major changes like that is a grey area because you are uncertain on what to do next, what you are destined to do and what your purpose is in life.”
  • “Currently, I feel I am in the grey area. Post-graduation I found it really hard to find a job. I probably filled out 200 job applications and did not get a call back from one, it felt discouraging. Right now I feel like just doing my own thing. I have a job already but it is not what I want to do for the rest of my life. I have begun to start my own project, for example, ‘The Group Chat’ which is my youtube channel. By doing that, I feel I am taking a step of figuring out exactly what it is I want to do.”

Post-graduation, what were your feelings and thoughts?

  • “I was really confused after graduation on what to do next. I felt my advisor did not set me up for success as far as giving me a game plan on what to do next. I really just felt I was thrown out in to the world and forced to figure things out on my own.”

Is your post-graduation timeline still the same? If not, what changed?

  • “It definitely changed. The career path I am on is totally different from what I planned freshman year. Now, I want to be my own boss and take the entrepreneurial route. I know that may take a little time because I do not have the money or support that a business has. But, I know I will be more content taking that route instead of working a job I will not be happy at and possibly get fired 10 years later or laid off.”
